VALO/ON 2017 brings lighting industry professionals together and offers views to the field regarding architecture, lighting technology and electrical engineering.
 
The event is organized for the first time at Event Centre Telakka on 1 and 2 February 2017 in Hernesaari, Helsinki.
 
An exciting new event for lighting professionals brings industry people together in February. VALO/ON 2017 is a two-day event that presents 29 leading public space lighting companies and their latest most interesting novelties and services.

Visitors have the opportunity to learn about lighting solutions from the point of view of architecture, lighting technology and electrical engineering. International keynote speakers present new ideas on how to solve lighting challenges and address light from various angles. A relaxed evening together allows people to meet old and new contacts in an inspiring location.

Event partners include the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of Finland, SIO and NSS.  Exhibition architect is Kari Lappalainen.

Programme

VALO/ON 2017 presents 29 leading public space lighting companies and their latest most interesting innovations and services. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about lighting solutions from the point of view of architecture, lighting technology and electrical engineering. The event brings together international keynote speakers and a relaxed evening together allows people to meet old and new contacts in an inspiring location.

In addition to the keynote speakers, on the stage we will see the Illuminating Engineering Society that organize programme in honor of the Day of Light. In the programme we will also see the popular PechaKucha Night and a show from Belenos Group of Arts. The moderator is Lorenz Backman and the music will be played by DJ Otto Talvio.

Don Slater from England reflects on light from the point of view of urbanization and urban lighting and planning. Don Slater is a professor of sociology at the London School of Economics and co-director of the Configuring Light/Staging the Social research group.

His current research programme, Configuring Light, promotes collaborations between social research and lighting design, particularly in public realm lighting, developing new methodologies, research projects and training programmes to improve the social knowledge base for urban lighting and planning.

The work of light designer Daniel Rybakken occupies the area between art and design, creating limited editions, art installations and prototypes for serial production. Rybakken has won several awards, of which the latest is his second Compasso d’Oro by ADI in 2016. In VALO/ON, he will mainly focus on daylight and how to artificially recreate its subconscious effect. 

Rybakken has received numerous awards, including the Compasso d’Oro by ADI that he received in 2016 for the second time.

Light PechaKucha

PechaKucha is a pithy and fast-paced format during which the speaker tells about a subject with 20 pictures during 20 seconds per picture. In Light PechaKucha there are 6 speakers, that will present their point of view to light and lighting.

SPEAKERS

Tatu Ahlroos

Tatu Ahlroos is an interior architect and designer who believes that we need shadows as well as light.  He also emphasises that we must not allow the new lighting innovations blind us from seeing the innovative uses of sunlight. He has created interior, furniture and lighting design both for public spaces and private home of a decade's worth. Currently, he is responsible for interior architecture projects at Muotohiomo, a company specialised in service design, product design, and interior architecture.

Laura Iisalo

Laura Iisalo is a Helsinki-based photographer and writer. During the past years, she has focused on documenting mostly makers such as artists, entrepreneurs, artisans and other creative individuals, and created and photographed Helsinki – People Make the City, a book full of stories from the capital’s creative makers and doers. As a photographer, she is a documentarist who presents her subjects beautifully. In addition to light, especially balance and lines play a major role in her pictures.

Ilkka Paloniemi

Ilkka Paloniemi is fascinated about urban environments and about our relationship with artificial light. Paloniemi is a leading consultant in performance art technologies at Granlund Helsinki that aims to improve the wellbeing of the built environment. He also works as a festival director and curator of the Lux Helsinki Light Festival. He has worked with presentation technology since the 80’s and is Master of Arts in Theater Arts, and a pedagogue.

Pietu Pietiäinen

Petteri "Pietu" Pietiäinen is Master of Theater Arts in lighting and sound design. He has done an extensive freelance career, mainly in lighting and video design for theatres, including the Finnish National Theatre, Teatteri Takomo and Ryhmäteatteri. At the National Theatre, he worked as lighting manager of the main stage for three years, and since 2014 has built his career as a freelance artist and entrepreneur. In the near future, he is light designing the classics of Bulkako and Chekhov at the National Theatre.

Stefan Lindfors

Interior architect and sculptor Stefan Lindfors maintains an active career in the international arena within the fields of Design, Architecture and Fine Arts. On the academic level, Lindfors has acted Professor at several Universities of Art & Design in Europe and the United States, also still taking on commissions as a lecturer for corporations and universities worldwide.

His works vary from furniture and industrial products to interiors for head quarters, stores, and airports, as well as street architectural cases such as restaurant terraces and public transport weather shelter stops. As a sculptor, Lindfors’ main core are his commissioned monuments for cities and corporations, as well as his large-scale sculpture exhibitions. His clients include so far, among many others, Alessi, Artek, Finavia, Marimekko, Nokia, Sony Playstation, and Vitra. Lindfors has earned several prestigious international awards for his works.

 

Light Pitching

What is the product of today? How does it represent today’s best design?
These are the questions that will be answered by the exhibitors. They have only 3 minutes to assure the listeners and tell about their latest most interesting novelty and services. The moderator is Lorenz Backman.
 

Belenos Group of Arts

Belenos is a group that creates versatile and high-class light performances. Their shows combine choreographies that captures the eye and emotional music.
